Reuse First

We collect cast off paper scraps from local printers and binders and reuse them in hand-bound journals/sketchbooks and greeting cards. All imagery is hand silkscreened onto the covers and backs of the cards and books. We also collect bottled from local bars that either don't recycle or choose to donate to us. We reuse the empty bottles by cutting them down and turning them into planters, funnels, change jars etc. We also etch images and words onto some bottles.

Reuse First was born out of our strong distaste for today's throw-away society. Living in a big city where recycling is more of a joke than a way of life, we feel it is even more important to show people what we can create from every day waste. Our goal is to get people thinking and acting more resourcefully and responsibly.

Grinderman Coffee

Grinderman Coffee Roasts and Bicycle Delivers Coffee to homes and offices all over Chicago. Grinderman Coffee began when i converted a propane gas grill into a coffee roaster. I began roasting coffee and selling it at musical concerts i would play. I had recently sold my motorized vehicle and was adapting a new outlook of living. when i was asked how else the coffee could be purchased i decided to start delivering coffee by bicycle. Human Powered Coffee. Bicycle Delivered Coffee. Grinderman Coffee.

I am inspired by the power of the human being. Growing coffee is hard work. Buying Direct and Fair Trade Coffees from Coffee growers provides a more rewarding and direct relationship to both the grower and the roaster. Empowering the relationships between people can be the most rewarding thing in life. Grinderman Coffee extends the personal relationship you can have to your coffee by bicycle delivering freshly roasted, direct and fair trade coffees to your door.

Zerobird Studio

Screen printing on paper and fabric using all environmentally friendly inks and chemicals.

I started screen printing a few years ago to balance out an often frustrating job as an Art Director in the ad industry. Screen printing gave me the freedom to make things, lots of things, away from the computer, clients, and restraints. I'm still focused on selling what i create but with my screen printing the ultimate goals are just to either make people smile or to help spread a positive message.

The Chicago el series was inspired by a daily bike ride to work under the Pink and Green Lines on Lake Street. All images are created from photos taken while biking around the city, following each line and enjoying the views.

Craftbelly

Craftbelly grew out of my obsession with handmade papers made around the world. The papers I use are usually either screen-printed or hand-painted, and I find beauty in the imperfections that each sheet carries. I decoupage them onto wooden frames and give them several coats of sealer to make it seem like they are painted right on. (I only wish I could paint like that!) For me, the joy of creating each frame starts with the repeated, almost mundane process of adhering the paper to the wood, where I get to use my hands and perfect my craft. But even though the process is the same for each one, I always get excited all over again when I finish a frame and take a good look at it. The joy continues when someone else gets excited about it too! I think they are an easy and funky way to add personality to your favorite photos and to your home.

Paper Tiger Cards

Paper Tiger Cards unofficially came together in the summer of 2007 as an outlet for bad jokes I'd had running through my mind that finally made it out into card form. After watching people hand the cards to their friends and watching them laugh, I wanted to make more things that people could share with each other and smile about, so soon there were tea towels and, eventually, puppets.

I try my best to work with green materials, like buying my cardstock from eco-centric companies like French Paper, and get my rovings and other felting supplies from Wisconsin, and when possible I try to pass on what I know to people who seem interested. I taught myself most of my felting process by making the things that I would like to see, but now I enjoy making things that other people cook up.
Paper Tiger Cards infuses so much personality in her felted creations, pick one up and you won't want to put it down! They make great gifts for all ages! You'll also love her finely crafted, amusing Gocco printed cards and hand embroidered tea towels.

Nerfect

I'm an artist who is constantly making things, many of which feature odd and whimsical characters. These characters are also featured in my growing line of stickers, buttons, t-shirts and now, plush toys. At shows, I often bring both one-of-a-kind original pieces and the wares I produce
en masse.

As for why I do any of this, I really have no choice, this is just how I am. The visions keep coming to me and I must document them. It has been this way since I first picked up a pencil. My loves are reflected in my work be it cheap toys and candy or mythology and cartoons. I try to find the magic in everyday existence.

Kate Funk

My work consists mostly of greeting cards that are A2-sized with different colored envelopes from Waste Not Paper. They all contain humorous photos I take with my cat and sidekick, AC, in mainly paper-made dioramas and ridiculous costumes. I also make antique silverware garden markers which are all flattened and hand-stamped by myself.

My card line actually started out as a joke. I decided to make a birthday card for one of my friends using AC in it. At the time I worked at a paper store here in Milwaukee, and the owner happened to see the card I had made on my friend's desk and asked me to make some more and sell them in her store. The rest just fell into place after that. Now I have the most amazing job in the world - I hang out with my cat all day making him costumes and dioramas and photographing it all.

Michelle Starbuck Designs

I use vintage and natural materials to create my limited edition and one of a kind earrings and necklaces. The materials and colors change often as I only acquire small amounts of beads, charms, and stones. I like to combine different metals and textures for contrast and try to incorporate truly unique vintage findings into the designs.

I've always been one of those people that says "I could make that". About 6 years ago, I had seen an amazing charm necklace in Lucky Magazine and realized that I had a lot of random vintage pieces from buying lots of jewelry on Ebay. I assembled them on a necklace and wore it to work. After numerous customers had asked to purchase my necklace, I decided that I should make a few more and put them out for sale at the boutique I worked at. The process of acquiring materials had been the best part. Sometimes I don't know what I'm going to do with things, I just know that I like it and I must make something with it. I have to be inspired to make every single design, which is why I often end up with so many one of a kind pieces. I'm not interested in making multiples. I think jewelry should be as unique as you are.

Laura George Art + Illustration

Working primarily with gouache, acrylic, wood paper and ink, my art is currently centered around dreamlike lands, surreal characters, and smatterings of pattern. Illustrative in nature, my work is inspired by the idea of finding novelty in everyday life, and the adventure in opening up to unlikely companions and fantastic situations. I am also continually inspired by the people I connect with, music, nature, animals, and traveling.

Substance Designs

Each piece of Substance Designs jewelry is designed and constructed by the hands of Carolyb Healy. Great consideration is given to the materials, textures, colors, the way light reflects or passes through each, and the source of the components.

The jewelry is sometimes vintage, sometimes upcycled, and sometimes new, but always created with the idea that great jewelry made around environmentally friendly practices doesn't have to be a splurge.

Substance Designs is driven to charitable giving, purchases locally when possible, support products made in the USA, and scours second hand stores in search of broken pieces to reincarnate. Almost all designs are vegetarian.

The goals are simple: reclaim, renew, and respect.

Simply Keen

The Simply Keen line consists of original-design rings, earrings, and necklaces, all of which are designed with three words in mind: modern, young, and simple. All of my jewelry is hand-crafted by me. I like to make a variety of designs, each of which is very limited in number, so each item is special. Simply Keen is created from a mix of natural stones, cut glass beads, gold- or sliver-plated findings, as well as some vintage/repurposed materials like old keys.

I love making jewelry! I began making jewelry in high school and dabbled in it over the years following. When I moved to Chicago in 2009 I was inspired by all of the local artists to really go for it and start my own line. When I started the Simply Keen line I wanted to create pieces that would compliment any outfit, in a simple, chic way.

Purple and Lime

My work uses a variety of materials, including: eco-friendly recycled
felt, polymer clay, Swarovski crystals, laser-cut acrylic, and
unexpected objects like childhood toys and doll furniture. I really
became obsessed with felt when I started selling on Etsy- not only is
it made from recycled bottles but it is so functional and easy to use.
purpleandlime acrylic pieces are my own original designs that are
then laser-cut- the variety of colors available is amazing and very
inspiring. I find my materials in many places, including small shops
in Chicago, online, and from supplies I have collected over the years.

I've felt the need to create beautiful things since I was a child and
wanted to be a fashion designer. Most of my inspiration for
purpleandlime comes from everyday life: food, pets, and the city of
Chicago. For example, my breakfast jewelry collection was based on my
college job at a Korean/breakfast restaurant. purpleandlime is a true
expression of all that fascinates and inspires me in a fun and
colorful way!
